American selection with a closed, oval to globe-like crown. This makes it less suitable for narrow streets and small gardens. Height circa 12 m. Young twigs are red-brown. The leaf stalk is red too. The bright green leaf is smaller than of the species: ca 8 cm. The underside is blue-green. In autumn the orange-red hues are less distinctive than of the species. The red flowers emerge before the leaves appear. The tree has a heavy main root with fibrous rootlets. In limy soil and dry soil, the growth stunts and no autumn colouring will occur. Though 'Tilford' is poorly sea wind resistant, it is best applied in coastal areas. Winter hardiness zone: 4
