Conspicuously columnar, small tree, usually not much taller than 3.5 m. The broadly elliptical to virtually round leaves are somewhat bronze coloured on emergence, but are dark green in summer. In autumn they turn yellowish with a red tinge. Around mid-April, the creamy white flowers open in short, erect racemes. The individual flowers are 1.5 - 2 cm across. They can be followed by relatively large, purplish black, edible fruits. Due to its small height and columnar growth pattern, it is good for use in narrow streets, housing estates and gardens. Amelanchier has few soil requirements but grows best in calcareous soil.
Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk' can eventually reach a height of 3 - 5 m, slow growing, depending on the site and climate conditions.
