Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan' grows into a modest or medium-sized tree, characterised by a somewhat erratic, pyramidal crown shape, with a possible height of around 10 metres. This Cryptomeria japonica cultivar is distinguished from its peers by its yellow needles. The young shoots are particularly striking with their brilliant sulphur-yellow hue. As the twigs mature, their colour transforms from pale yellow to a green-yellow and yellow-green hue. Remarkably, the yellow leaves of Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan' are quite resistant to sunburn. Only under very sunny and dry conditions will burning occur. However, severe frost can damage the young buds of the tree. Thanks to its bright foliage, Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan' can be used effectively to brighten up somewhat darker areas of gardens and parks. This traditional Japanese cultivar reached Europe before 1970 and falls in hardiness zone 6a.
