Common privet is a medium-sized, vase-shaped shrub branching from the base. This species, because of its basal branching, almost never grows into a small tree. It is a variable species, with plants sometimes deciduous and sometimes semi-evergreen. Of course, this partly depends on frost periods. Leaf shape and size is also variable. Around midsummer, the white flowers open in dense panicles. The flowers have a woefully sweet fragrance and are highly favoured by bees. They are followed by glossy black berries. Rarely the berries are dark green or yellow.
L. vulgare is the only species native to the Netherlands. The shrub grows in the Zeeland, South Holland and North Holland dunes, preferably on calcareous sandy soil. It is a very versatile species. Because of its good branching and the fact that the plants tolerate pruning very well, it is a popular hedge plant. L. vulgare is also very suitable as a filler shrub and in greenbelts.

The right time to plant Ligustrum vulgare is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Ligustrum vulgare with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
