'Genie' is a New Zealand cultivar that was selected for its very dark flower colour, rich flowering and the fact that the tree flowers profusely at a young age. From a large shrub form, 'Genie' grows into a small tree with a height of 4 to 6 m with a semi-open, oval crown. The relatively thick twigs bear fresh dark green leaves. Medium-sized flowers open in April. These are broad oval to almost round and maintain this shape throughout the flowering period. The flowers are deep purple-red and have a warm appearance. Like several other modern Magnolia cultivars, 'Genie' flowers richly at a young age. Hardiness zone 6.
