Whereas the species M. grandiflora is somewhat irregular and forms a broad pyramidal to round crown, ALTA, on the contrary, grows with a dense, broad columnar to narrow oval crown. The evergreen, oval, leaves are a glossy dark green with a light brown hairy underside. The thick, leathery leaves are highly resistant to wind.
