A big, multiple-stemmed tree with a loose, spreading crown and a smooth grey bark. The purple brown twigs have a thin layer of wax and have brown-purple buds. The obovate leaf is extremely large, 40 - 50 cm at a maximum and the topside is shiny and fresh green. The underside of the young leaf is light grey-green and slightly haired. In summer cream-white, bowl-shaped flowers appear that are more erect than M. hypoleuca. The cream-white petals are 10 - 12 cm long. The long stamen are purple at the base. The flowers emit a faint, slightly unpleasant odour and are followed by ovoid, purple-red fruits that are circa 10 cm. Inside the fruits there are carmine-red seeds. After years a magnificent solitary that requires quite some space.

The right time to plant Magnolia tripetala is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Magnolia tripetala with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
