Striking, large shrub to small tree with a round crown. The green twigs and branches are a great ornamental value and an immediately significant feature. They are slightly flat-topped and occupied by substantial, equally green thorns. The three-part leaves, which give the species its name, consist of obovate to elliptical leaf segments. In autumn they turn yellow before falling. From April until into early summer the single flowers appear. They start off bowl-shaped but flatten out completely when they bloom. The flowers have a pleasant fragrance. Another less lavish blossom usually follows in August and September. The fruits are reminiscent of small oranges. They stay greenish-yellow for a long time, eventually turning orange-yellow. They have soft hair and are not edible. Despite its somewhat tropical appearance, Poncirus is quite hardy. The tree requires a sheltered site because it does not tolerate a cold, drying wind very well. Preferably suits a somewhat heavier soil or sunny place in a park or garden.
