This small East-Asian tree closely resembles S. aucuparia and attains a height of 8 - 10 m. The crown is ascending when the tree is still young but it later becomes broad and oval. The smooth bark is silver-grey to greyish-brown and bears brown lenticels. Young twigs are olive-green and also carry remarkable lenticels. S. commixta has imparipinnate leaves consisting of 5 to 6 (seldom 7) pairs of leaves. The separate leaflets are elongated and serrated and their colour is a glossy dark green, bluish-green on the underside. In the autumn it turns from yellow and red to deep coral-red. The flowers emerge late in the spring and are followed by glossy orange-red to brownish-red fruits with a diameter of approx. 0.8 cm. They stay on the tree until late October.
