Occurs in the wild in North America where it grows to a height of 6 - 8 m and a width of approx. 4 - 5 m. The crown is compact and is formed by stiff ascending branches. The leaves are imparipinnate and have a dark red stem. The leaflets are 3 to 8 cm in size and elliptical to elongated in shape. They are bluish-green on the upper side: the underside is light green. Deep red fruits follow the flowers, hanging in remarkably large umbels of up to 20 cm in diameter. S. decora produces abundant fruit. Because it makes so few demands on the soil this tree can be used in many places, provided that the soil is well drained. It is very winter-hardy and is little sensitive to bacterial fire blight.
