The Hungarian lilac is a large shrub that can only grow into a small tree under exceptionally good conditions. Its dense crown is round and grows to about 4 m high. The young twigs are reddish-brown and covered with few lenticels. The old bark is grey and smooth. The elliptical leaves are dark green on top and distinctly lighter blue-green to light greenish grey on the underside. In May and June, S. josikaea blooms with more or less erect panicles of violet flowers. The individual flowers are tubular and the lobes at the top do not spread, even when the flowers unfurl. They have a sweet but weak scent. In general, S. josikaea does not flower extremely profusely.
Because the ornamental value of S. josikaea is less than for the various cultivars of S. vulgaris, it is ideally a plant for use in park-like settings and public spaces. It is an easy plant that grows preferably in neutral or calcareous soil.

Syringa josikaea is átlagos and can eventually reach a height of 3-5 m, depending on the site and climate conditions.
The right time to plant Syringa josikaea is during the dormancy period. In Western Europe, Syringa josikaea with root balls can generally be planted from mid-November to late April, although this depends strongly on the climatic conditions and the species of tree.
