Medium-large conifer with a densely branched crown that grows a uniform, narrow pyramidal shape at first but that becomes somewhat more irregular later. Attains a height of up to 20 m but does not become broader than approx. 4 - 5 m. The trunk is reddish brown and peels in narrow strips. The branches grow slanted upwards slightly to horizontal. The flattened twigs have many branches and the scales are stacked like roof shingles. They are matted to a somewhat glossy bright green and turn yellowish brown in the winter. When rubbed they give off a strong smell. The flowers and small cones are relatively unremarkable. Since this conifer tolerates pruning particularly well, it has become one of the most popular hedge plants. It is a particularly winter-hardy plant that tolerates dryness. There are very many cultivars that vary greatly in terms of growth habit and colour of foliage.
