This geographic variety of the American beech closely resembles the F. grandifolia species. As well as the distribution zone - more southerly than typical for the species - there are a number of differences. With this variety, the leaf margins are not as deeply serrated and the leaf tips are more slender. The leaf underside sometimes has a greyish frosted appearance. The cupules are covered with brush-like spines, but these are shorter. The tree has shallow roots and thrives on richer, loamy soil with a high humus content. Like F. grandifolia, the bark is smooth, silver grey and susceptible to sunburn. Rather sensitive to wind.
