Grows from a shrub into a small tree with a densely branching, broad ovoid, later round crown. The flowers appear over a longer period. Depending on the temperature, the first flowers may open around mid-April. New buds continue to form while the shoots emerge and flowers are still opening in June, albeit less profusely than during the main blossoming. The flowers open from crescent-shaped buds. They are a warm, purplish red on the outside and light, pinkish purple on the inside. ‘Susan’ is the most successful cultivar of the series and is also known as ‘Eight Girls’. The main advantage of ‘Susan’ is that the flower buds only develop in spring, so they cannot freeze in the winter. Blossoms very profusely even from a young age.
