'Otto Luyken' is a medium-sized evergreen shrub that usually does not grow much taller than about 1 m, but under favourable conditions, can reach about 2 m high after many years. The densely branched crown is broadly spreading upwards and the plant is over one and a half times as wide as it is tall. The annual twigs are yellow-green and the oblong to lanceolate leaves are 7-12 cm long and 2-4 cm wide. The leaves are typically gutter-folded, characteristic of 'Otto Luyken'. The greatest width of the leaf is slightly below the centre of the leaf blade. The leaf margin is entire, but older leaves are often serrate at the tips. The white flowers are in remarkably long and rarefied erect clusters up to 20 cm long. 'Otto Luyken' flowers profusely around May-June, followed by a, also rich, flowering around late August-early September. 'Otto Luyken' was found and named by the German breeder H.A. Hesse in Weener-Ems in 1940. It is an excellent hardy cultivar that is ideally suited for use in planting groups and beds. Hardiness zone 6b.
