'Wind Candle' is a moderately strong-growing columnar tree growing 10-12 m tall. Later in life, the crown becomes narrowly oval. The upright branches grow steeply, creating a dense crown. The leaves are inversely ovate and regularly lobed. They are distinctly larger than in Q. robur 'Fastigiata', one of the parents of 'Wind Candle'. In summer, the leaves are glossy dark green. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow to yellow-brown. The withered leaves remain in the tree well into winter before falling off, usually into spring. 'Wind Candle' is a strong tree that grows best on nutrient-rich, moist soil. The tree has high resistance to mildew and is very wind resistant.
'Wind Candle' was selected as a seedling by Guy Sternberg, an authority on oaks from Petersburg, Illinois, USA. The tree resulted from a cross between Quercus bicolor and Q. robur 'Fastigiata'. Hardiness zone 6.
