In its natural habitat in the northeast of North America this species grows to become a small to medium-sized tree. It is a slow grower with a light-grey trunk and glossy reddish-brown twigs. This gives the tree a remarkable appearance in the winter. The imparipinnate leaves consist of 13 - 17 lanceolate leaflets that turn golden yellow in the autumn. The leaf edge is usually sharply serrated. The flowers are in umbels with a diameter of approx. 16 cm. The separate flowers are 0.5 – 0.7 cm in size and white. Orange-red berries follow in the autumn. S. americana closely resembles S. aucuparia but is distinguished by the reddish-brown twigs and the somewhat narrower dark green leaves.
